Good afternoon, and thank you for accepting me in this community! :)

I'd like to share with you one of my latest discoveries, the wonderful book "The Circus, 1870-1950" by TASCHEN, which contains about 900 other color and B&W vintage illustrations and photographs! It's a must-have for any circus, glamour and vintage lover.

More info about this incredible book can be found on my blog. You can leaf through the book here, too.

vintage clothing stores?
from deuxamours

Hi everyone! So I'm in a predicament. I don't normally travel very much around the US, and recently I've just begun doing so for my kind of new job. My main thing when travelling is usually seeing art, and finding vintage clothing stores.

Anyone have any advice of places I should go to in Baltimore, MD, or New Orleans?

Thanks all!

I couldn't resist sharing this because it's so cool. I'm a history MA student and the dept. is paying for me to go to a symposium at this stunning place: http://www.stanhywet.org/

A 1920s Reception at Stan Hywet Hall — Manor House
Experience a rare evening as guests at Stan Hywet Hall with the hands of time turned back to 1920. Stroll the corridors and enjoy period music, and encounter other guests of the Seiberling family who will engage you regarding the comings and goings of the day (1920). You may even bump into a domestic servant or two during your stay – if they are not too “below you” for you to engage them in conversation!

This event is especially going to be great because it's not for the general public, just a bunch of history nuts!!! (Unfortunately, I won't be dressing up because I will be in lectures all day.)

A party like this is very in keeping with the values of the Sieberling family who were excellent and gracious hosts. The motto above their door: Non Nobis Solum (Not for Us Alone) was meant to welcome guests to their home.

I'm just so history fan-girly right now.

Favorite eras? Why? The 1920s through the !950s. Each era has its own unique charm. I love the frivolity of the '20s, the high glamour of the '30s, the style, music and dancing of the '40s and '50s. Not to mention all the gorgeous ladies that came out of each decade.

Specific interests/knowledge in vintage/specific eras? (fashion, film, automobiles, culture, locale (americana?) cooking, crafts, general aesthetics... etc?) I'm a hair and make-up artist who specializes in looks from the 1920s through the 1960s, so i would say that i am knowledgeable in vintage personal style. :) I'm also interested in mid-century design (I have a blog dedicated to it - www.retrorichmond.com), vintage clothing and different dances from bygone eras. (I LOVE to lindy hop and do the Charleston!)

Specific icons/models/filmstars of interest? (how/why/when did you gain interest in them...?) I LOVE my bombshells! Marilyn, Jean, Jayne, Hedy, Ava, Jane, Joan, Veronica, Dorothy, Yvonne, Gene, Mamie, etc. These ladies are my inspiration when working with clients and when getting myself ready for the day. Their look is flawless and put together. I strive to be the same way. I'm also in love with photographer George Hurrell and anything he's ever done. When did i first become interested in them? Probably when i was a child. I've always loved old films and the glamorous women in them. I wanted to be just like them. I started dressing in my grandmother's heels and putting make-up on in elementary school and it's been nonstop ever since!

If you could have [tea/a cocktail/wine] with one(or more?) dead person (of one era's past) who would it be? Why? See my list above and add to it Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Gene Kelly, Benny Goodman, Clara Bow - i could go on and on. I would just want to talk about what life was like back then. I'd want to hear any and all the interesting stories they had to share. I'm fascinated with old stories!

Does your S.O. share the same interests? Any other friends IRL? My boyfriend is very supportive of my interests (or obsessions as he might call them!). He's interested in some of the same music and dances I enjoy, but for the most part he could probably take it or leave it. One of the photographers i work for shares some of my classic Hollywood interests, but other than that i don't have any friends who will come over and watch old movies with me while setting our pin curls. I wish i did.

Why did you join this comm...? Because i'm very much a lady interested in the vintage lifestyle!

Feel free to share a vintage or family recipe. This dish doesn't really have a name. I just call it the "cherry angel food cake dish that tastes like cheesecake my mom used to make when i was a kid" Enjoy!

Ingredients:
1 angel food cake
1 can of cherry (or a different fruit) pie filling in sauce
1 large box of vanilla pudding
1 8oz container of sour cream
1 container of cool whip.

Directions:
Crumble angel food cake in the bottom of a casserole dish. In a sauce pan, make vanilla pudding as directed, when finished, mix in sour cream. Pour mixture over cake. Next, pour in pie filling and spread over dish. Cover mixture with a layer of cool whip and refrigerate. Serve cold.

Favorite eras? Why? Hmm...I like the 1920's and 30's because of the clothes and hair and dancing and...being carefree, I guess. I like the 1950's because it just seems so different from now. There were happy housewives and drive in theaters and Greaser's and Soc's and soda fountains and travelling salesmen...I don't know.

Specific interests/knowledge in vintage/specific eras? (fashion, film, automobiles, culture, locale (americana?) cooking, crafts, general aesthetics... etc?) I'm definitely interested in film and fashion from the first half of the 20th century.

Specific icons/models/filmstars of interest? (how/why/when did you gain interest in them...?) Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Grace Kelly, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker, Louise Brooks, and  a lot more that I really can't think of right now.

If you could have [tea/a cocktail/wine] with one(or more?) dead person (of one era's past) who would it be? Why?Hmm...it would be a joint cocktail with Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart and possibly Gregory Peck. Because they're just that amazing.

Does your S.O. share the same interests? Any other friends IRL? Nope, I'm a loner. No one even likes watching old movies with me. :(

Why did you join this comm...? Because its so rare for me to find other people who are interested in things I am, I felt I had to jump on this opportunity.

Feel free to share a vintage or family recipe. Hmm, I'm in the midst of a move so everythings shuffled about. Maybe later?

Favorite eras? Why? I've long been fascinated with the era between the world wars, since that's when American society became modernized in so many ways (urbanization, industrialization, mass communication, etc.) Also have interest in the 1940s through the 1960s.

Specific interests/knowledge in vintage/specific eras? (fashion, film, automobiles, culture, locale (americana?) cooking, crafts, general aesthetics... etc?) Film, music, radio-TV, journalism, pop culture as a whole

Specific icons/models/filmstars of interest? (how/why/when did you gain interest in them...?) My number-one icon is Carole Lombard, my all-time favorite actress; some of you may be familiar with my LJ community dedicated to her in particular and classic Hollywood in general, "Carole & Co." (hope the plug was sufficiently subtle). I'm also a fan of many other stars of the time, such as Myrna Loy, Barbara Stanwyck, Jean Harlow and others. In music, my interests include Louis Armstrong and Bing Crosby, the men who taught us how to swing and sing, the Boswell Sisters, Lee Wiley, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday...the list goes on.

If you could have [tea/a cocktail/wine] with one(or more?) dead person (of one era's past) who would it be? Why? Lombard would certainly be invited. How about her, Armstrong and Orson Welles? (Three examples of genius, each in their own way.)

Does your S.O. share the same interests? Any other friends IRL? Well, I could answer that if I had a significant other...

Why did you join this community? It's always good to meet people who both share these interests and provide new perspectives on them.

Feel free to share a vintage or family recipe. Don't really have one.

What are some good vintage/historic spots to hit in Hawaii? (Besides the obvious Pearl Harbor/USS Arizona)

Anyone?

I'll be there for nearly a week and I'm not a lay around on the beach type (I be a pale redhead...I burn in sunlight.)
